Chicago Bears Hire Matt Nagy from Kansas City as Head Coach

Chicago BearsThe Chicago Bears have hired the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as their new head coach. The 39-year old replaces recently fired John Fox who went 14-34 in three seasons with the club. Nagy has spent the last ten years working with Andy Reid, first with the Philadelphia Eagles and then with the Chiefs. His team won their last four games of the regular season, taking the division title, but then losing in the wild card round in a close game to the Tennessee Titans.

The Bears interviewed five other candidates before talking with Nagy on Sunday. The need for an offensive minded coach likely comes from the fact the Bears offense ranked 30th last year in points per game and the are trying to develop recent first round draft pick Mitchell Trubisky as their franchise quarterback. Prior to becoming co-offensive and then offensive coordinator, Nagy spent three years as the quarterback's coach for the Chiefs. In that time he helped quarterback Alex Smith make the pro bowl. Nagy was reported to be a fan of Trubisky before last years draft.

The Bears are now the sixth team in the NFL to have plucked from the Andy Reid coaching tree. Current head coaches who were assistants for Reid include Todd Bowles (New York Jets), John Harbaugh (Baltimore Ravens), Sean McDermott (Buffalo Bills), Doug Pederson (Eagles) and Ron Rivera (Carolina Panthers).

Among those who interviewed for the job was Bears current defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Though they passed on him for head coach, the team hopes to retain him as DC going forward, but Fangio will likely have other options as well.

Besides developing Trubisky, Nagy will need to change the culture in the Windy City as the club has only made the playoffs once in the last decade.
