Belligerent David Ayer to Write and Direct Bright Sequel

Confirming rumors that Netflix greenlit a sequel before the movie was released, sandwich-themed Hollywood gossip blog The Wrap has confirmed that David Ayer will write and direct a sequel to Bright. Original screenwriter Max Landis won't be returning, it seems, due to being the latest powerful man in Hollywood to be accused of sexual assault. But that won't stop Ayer from picking up the torch, and stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton from apparently returning for the sequel.

Bright

On the bright side — get it? Bright side? — Bleeding Cool's Bill Waters generously called Bright "not the worst film you'll see all year," high praise considering the response from some other critics. Waters cited The Emoji Movie and Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween as worse movies than Bright, though all things are, of course, subjective. Like many recent critically panned films, Bright has an 88% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes compared to its 26% critic score.

Ayer faced a similar incongruency with Suicide Squad, the 2016 DCEU film that also earned a 26% critic score, but a 60% audience rating. Ayer hasn't made headway with critics, but either audiences have grown to like his work more, or they've become more spiteful in response to critical panning thanks to the controversies surrounding Justice League and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Netflix says Bright was its most-viewed original movie of all time.
