Flash Season 4: What to Look Forward to in 2018

The Flash will return on January 16th and it's coming off a pretty good cliffhanger. Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) has been focused on the group of metahumans that were created when he returned from the Speed Force in the season premiere, but now that he knows that a single person, Clifford DeVoe (Neil Sandilands) is behind it, Barry did his best to shut down The Thinker before anyone got hurt. Instead, DeVoe was ten steps ahead of Barry at every turn and ended up transferring his consciousness into the body of Dominic Lanse (Kendrick Sampson) and leaving his own corpse behind to frame Barry for murder.

When the series returns, Barry will be on trial for murder and Mark Valley joins the cast as the prosecutor while Cecile Horton (Danielle Nicolet) defends him. We can see in trailers that she is going to push for him to reveal that he's the Flash, which I'm not exactly sure how that would get him off the hook other than to explain why he was pursuing DeVoe in the first place. I think they will end up going a different route, one that involves a lot of detective work done by the DCU's second greatest detective, Ralph Dibny (Hartley Sawyer). This is a chance to move Ralph from being comedic sidekick and give him a few heroic moments while Barry is in prison. A hint that this is the direction their going is the report that the second episode back is called The Elongated Knight Rises.

But the court case is only part of what the team will have to deal with. DeVoe is not dead, if anything he's even more powerful now that his mind is in the body of a metahuman with psychic abilities. And we've only seen part of his plan. He made twelve new metas for a reason, not just to create one to serve as a new host body. He's collected a few already in Iron Heights while we still have more to meet. It kind of feels like everything has been going according to DeVoe's plan all along. But one of the things the writers stressed going into the season was a lighter, more fun tone. So I can't see them keeping Barry in jail too long.

The other question lingering out there comes out of the Crisis on Earth-X crossover event. Who was the girl at the wedding? A caterer (Jessica Parker Kennedy) approached Barry just before the wedding and seemed to be a bit too familiar. Speculation began immediately that she was either Dawn Allen, daughter of Barry and Iris (Candice Patton) and a member of the Tornado Twins, or she is Jenni Ognats, Barry's granddaughter and member of the Legion of Superheroes named XS. Word is that the character will be returning, but its not saying on which Arrowverse series. Supergirl is introducing the Legion of Superheroes this year and XS could easily be part of that storyline, having just popped in for the wedding. And it was Supergirl's part of the crossover that she appeared in.

Flash season 4 picks back up on January 16th with an episode called, Trial of the Flash.
