Hailee Steinfeld in New Image from the Bumblebee Solo Movie

We have another Transformers movie coming out next year, and it's the first one that isn't going to be directed by Michael Bay. The series has somehow managed to grab Travis Knight from the fantastic Kubo and the Two Strings to direct, and Empire has a new image and comment from Knight about the movie. The image features star Hailee Steinfeld and the old VW bug that will be Bumblebee in this movie.

"I wanted to approach this massive, expansive franchise and really focus in on a tiny corner of the canvas," Knight told us. "Everything I've tried to do at Laika, searching for an artful blend of darkness and light, intensity and warmth, humour and heart, I wanted to bring to the Transformers franchise."

Laika is known for taking movies that look like they should be made for kids and making them unexpectedly dark and meaningful. If there was ever a person who could take this very tired franchise in a new direction, it would be Knight.

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.

Bumblebee, directed by Travis Knight, stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Rachel Crow, and Pamela Adlon. It will be released on December 21st, 2018.
