Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is not a Remake of The Lost World

Colin Trevorrow might have gotten the boot from Star Wars: Episode IX but he still has a big sequel coming out next year. Trevorrow is the writer and producer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom which just released its first trailer this month. Trevorrow did an interview which was posted to Youtube (via /Film and spoke a bit about the movie. When asked about the connection to Frankenstein and the concept of the man made monster turning on man Trevorrow said that he was making more of a statement about us as people.

"To me it's about greed. The first film is about how if there's money on the table, there will be somebody who will do the worst imaginable things, or in a lot of case, the dumbest imaginable thing in order to get that money. This film focuses a little bit more on our responsibility for these animals that we've made as a result of that greed, but also just the darkest and worst instincts of humans, again, if there's money involved."

The idea of using the dinosaurs as weapons for war was brought up in the last movie which conjures images of soldiers riding raptors into battle. That is kind of awesome but also kind of ridiculous and Trevorrow didn't want to go that far.

"It's important that we keep it at least grounded in a space where the dinosaurs are a parable for animals in the world today. I think that ultimately, when people are able to watch this film and where this franchise is going, it really is about the ethical treatment of animals in the world and our responsibility to the living creatures that we share the planet with, alongside our responsibilities to the planet itself. I think the riding of a t-rex by a soldier is a level of fantasy, [while] I love it and I would love to see it, I don't know if it's specifically this franchise, but it's super cool."

People have been speculating that this is going to be a remake of The Lost World only told through a slightly different lens. That doesn't appear to be the case. Trevorrow has said that the island with the volcano is only the first half of the movie and that it ends up going somewhere we don't expect.

"It looks like it is because they all go to a fog-covered, scary island with dinosaurs on it, but it goes to a very, very different place than anyone expects. Really the heart and soul of the movie, the turn of the story, is not what we've shown in this trailer. It's very much not like The Lost World."

In the era of franchise management there is always the worry that a movie won't really have a solid beginning, middle, and end so they can keep setting up for more movies. This is the problem that Iron Man 2 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 both fell into; they were more about franchise management rather than being a good movie in its own right. Trevorrow assures that while this movie does set up for a third one it does have a solid ending.

"At the end of this movie, it's not a cliffhanger, but it's designed for people to want to know what's going to happen next, whereas the earlier Jurassic Park movies had pretty clear definitive endings. They were much more episodic. In working with Derek Connolly, my co-writer, we were also thinking about where it was gonna go in the future."

Jurassic World was a huge movie 2015 grossing over $1.6 billion dollars at the box office. It isn't at all surprising that Universal is already planning on making a third one of these. Even if Fallen Kingdom is half as good as the first movie it will still do really well.

When the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, directed by J.A. Bayona, stars Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Toby Jones, James Cromwell, Ted Levine, Geraldine Chaplin, Rafe Spall, B.D. Wong, and Justice Smith. It will be released on June 22, 2018.
