New York Yankees Hire Aaron Boone as New Manager

In 2001, the Detroit Lions hired Matt Millen to be their general manager. Millen, an ex-player, had zero coaching or managing experience. He had become an analyst after playing, and suddenly the Ford family gave him the reigns in what turned out to be a disastrous run that ended in 2008. That was the first thing I thought of after reading the the New York Yankees have hired former player and ESPN analyst Aaron Boone to be their new head coach.

Aaron Boone

Boone replaces Joe Girardi, making him the 35th manager of the team, one of the highest-profile jobs in Baseball. He comes to the position with no prior managerial or coaching experience. But he is a much beloved former player for the Yankees having hit a walk-off, championship-winning home run in 2003 against their arc-rival Boston Red Sox. Boone comes from a baseball family, both his father and brother were professional players, and is good with the media. He was also able to convince owner Hal Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman that he was the man for the job. As with other recent hires, Boone is considered a younger manager at the age of 44.

He last played in the majors in 2009. Besides the Yankees, he also played for the Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Washington Nationals, Florida Marlins, and Houston Astros.

Girardi, the team's previous manager, had his contract end and not renewed even though he took the team all the way to the seventh game of the AL Championship this year. Other candidates for the job included: San Francisco Giants coach Hensley Meulens, Yankees bench coach Rob Thomson, former Cleveland and Seattle manager Eric Wedge, Dodgers coach Chris Woodward, and former Yankee Carlos Beltran.
