PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Is Getting A Mobile Version In China

Tencent is going all in on 'battle royale' in China. Just yesterday we heard word of a mode in the China-only Call of Duty Online that uses the cornerstones of the popular genre, and it's back with a pretty bizarre announcement. The company announced that it is working with developer Bluehole to create an officially licenced Player Unknown's Battlegrounds for phones.

Before you get too excited about the idea of the game on the go, it seems likely that this release will be exclusive to China under the Tencent banner. As reported by this Chinese outlet, (via Touch Arcade) the developer and Tencent want to make sure the core of the game is intact in the port. It's added that progress is going well and it should see a release in the "near future."

Again, as with many Tencent games, this looks like it's being prepped exclusively for the Chinese market. But still — the fact that there will soon be a PUBG licensed mobile game out there is kind of fascinating. I can't wait to see gameplay, because I can't even fathom how it will play on a touchscreen interface. Whether the concept will spread to other areas of the world remains to be seen.
