Mech Cadet Yu #4 Review: First Contact For The Cadets

Our four mech cadet pilots, Stanford, Park, Sanchez, and Olivetti, are locked in battle with a Sharg which just made Earthfall.

The general is livid with the team for engaging the monster, and he is scrambling mechs to intercept, but the only ones available are severely damaged.

Worse yet, Park's Hero Force begins misbehaving again, causing her to be more of a liability than an asset.

These may not even be the only threats the mech cadets have to deal with either…

Mech Cadet Yu continues the tale of its utterly lovable lead character coming to grips with the responsibility thrust upon him with an action-packed tale of baggage, monsters, and learning to trust one another.

This comic continues to draw on its Shonen anime inspiration, but adds enough of its own flare and style. Writer Greg Pak continues to show he is one of the industry greats.

Admittedly, the tropes it is using do become more prominent as the story goes on. Mech Cadet Yu should consider adding plot points that don't feel too predictable if it wants to stay this charming and fun for the long haul.

Takeshi Miyazawa's art remains top notch with the exception of some of the fight scenes. While he is good at depicting how insane some of Stanford Yu's stunts are, the fight scenes can get a bit incomprehensible. It becomes difficult to determine who is winning and who is losing, though I will admit that is a trend across much of mainstream comics these days.

Triona Farrell's color work similarly remains excellent, with bright and dazzling covers being splashed across the page to catch the eye and keep things fun.

Mech Cadet Yu #4 is still a fun and exciting read with an endearing cast of characters and fun premise. It does need to start relying on its own ideas more, but, without spoiling anything, it looks like it will be doing just that within the next few issues. It earns its recommendation, and you should definitely give it a read.
