Report: WWE Won't Air Starrcade On WWE Network Because They Already Have Your Money

WWE is reviving the classic Starrcade brand for a special event at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina later this month, but if you're not at the event to see it, you're out of luck! WWE isn't planning to air the event on the WWE Network, and Dave Meltzer's Wrestling Observer Radio show claims the reason is that WWE doesn't think it makes financial sense.

Report: WWE Won't Air Starrcade On WWE Network Because They Already Have Your Money

The reason it wouldn't make sense is that WWE figures the show isn't likely to add new subscribers or keep current ones from leaving, which may very well be true. The people who would be interested in watching this show, for the most part, probably already have the WWE Network to watch the new and classic content that's already available. A show like Starrcade, using the name of the annual event that was once WCW's version of WrestleMania, is a big deal to hardcore wrestling fans, but hardcore wrestling fans are exactly the audience that subscribed to the WWE Network on day one and will probably never unsubscribe (no matter how much they complain about WWE on the internet).

Refusing to give hardcore wrestling fans what they want has been a staple of WWE's business plan for decades. Just look at all the years of John Cena as the company's number one babyface, and all of the years to come of Roman Reigns in that same position! It's a very shrewd business plan that assumes hardcore fans will pay for the product no matter what, so the company might as well ignore their tastes and try to attract new fans instead. Unfortunately, ratings show that they're not necessarily doing a great job of that either.

One would think that it wouldn't be that expensive to film and broadcast Starrcade, especially if they filmed it cheaply (which would mimic the old school feel of the show anyway). However, it looks like WWE, whose popularity ain't what it used to be, is looking to cut costs wherever possible. As a result, if you want to see Starrcade on November 25, you'll have to make your way to Greensboro and watch it live.
