Nissan's Latest Ad Is Already Riding 'The Last Jedi's Coattails

In an ad that is supposed to be all about how impressive Nissan's new driver-assistance 'Intelligent Mobility' software is, the takeaway message is that The Last Jedi is awesome and the only way to experience it is by owning a Nissan. Yeah, it's not the greatest ad message, because it leaves us with so very many questions about what exactly Nissan's goal was here. Sure, driver-assistance software is the newest trend in automotive add-on features, but Nissan isn't the first company in the game. Both Subaru and Toyota have rolled out their own driver-assistance programs within the last two years. Which, makes sense. Japan has the most rapidly aging society of any country today, and anything that requires fine-motor skills and attention gets more and more difficult the older you get. So naturally, Japanese car companies were going to be the first in the game.

And because Nissan are an official partner of the Star Wars series – they did roll out a bunch of Nissan Rogues with Rogue One themes last year. However, that at least had some kind of a tie-in. There was a commercial that involved a Nissan Rogue driving through one of the most iconic Star Wars battles, which ended up becoming the Star Wars Battle Test VR experience that Nissan trucked around to the various auto shows this year.

The Last Jedi card at the end of this particular commercial seems a bit, well, out of place. Sure, the commercial is shot in the black-red style we've been seeing in Last Jedi posters all year with the iconic Star Wars soundtrack, but I'm not seeing much else that ties in the smart tech software to Star Wars. Sure, it's a 30 second commercial, but I'd at least a bit more information on the tech than just its name. The video description on Youtube actually gives me more information than watching the ad does. That… is not good.

Really, this commercial just seems like a last-ditch attempt to grab at some extra viewers by riding the massive wave of Last Jedi hype that's been rolling along since Star Wars Celebration.

And because I know at least twelve of you are asking, no, there are no porgs in the commercial. You can watch the porg-less ad below.
