'Super Mario Odyssey' Becomes Fastest Selling Mario Title In America

This morning, Nintendo broke the news that Super Mario Odyssey became the fastest selling Mario title in the United States. That includes the original Super Mario Bros. (which had the benefit of being sold with the NES) and New Super Mario Bros. Wii (which was the current record holder). The game sold more than 1.1 million units in the U.S. alone, meaning nearly half the current Nintendo Switch owners in the country (currently at 2.6 million) own a copy of the game. Reggie Fils-Aime had this to say on the success:

'Super Mario Odyssey' Becomes Fastest Selling Mario Title In America

"The public continues to respond positively to Mario's latest adventure," said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's President and COO. "We're also seeing sales momentum for Nintendo Switch thanks to an ever-growing catalog of games from large publishers and indie developers."

The game currently sits at 2 million sold worldwide and is in fourth for overall sales for Nintendo-created titles. The current record-holder is The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild at 4.7 million, but it had the benefit of being released seven months earlier and being the main title you needed to buy for the console. We'll see how the next few months of sales go as we enter the holiday season, but it's very possible for Super Mario Odyssey to take the top spot if it keeps riding this sales wave.
