Arrow Season 6: What Is This Season Aiming At?

It's hard to tell what a new season is going to look like based off of the season premiere. Most of the time they use the first episode to clean up any cliffhangers and set the show back to status quo. This was always prevalent on X-Files where the season finales showed us hard evidence and Dana Scully was amazed only to have the genie put back in the bottle with the next season premiere and Scully return to being skeptical. But with the second episodes now in, we can look at what may be in store this season of the Arrowverse.

Stephen Amell in Arrow Recap

This season of Arrow is all about fatherhood. I would say about Fathers and Sons, but Quentin Lance and Rene Ramirez have daughters and they're just as much in the mix as Oliver Queen and John Diggle. The end of the premiere they gave us a red herring, having Oliver exposed on the nightly news. And where I think there is going to be a lot of issues with Agent Samanda Watson digging into the Green Arrow and his team, I think the reveal was to force Oliver to look at the risk he takes every time he puts on the hood and how things have changed with William.

But on top of the Oliver/William dynamic. You've got Diggle who will be taking over as Green Arrow. I'd be surprised if there isn't a scene between Diggle and Lyla Michaels where she finds out about him suiting up in green and her reminding him that he also has a son who needs a father. On top of that, we have Rene trying to get his daughter back. Quentin dealing with the fact there is an evil doppleganger of his daughter terrorizing the city. And on top of all that, we have a 2-part episode where Slade Wilson goes to find his son Joseph. It's like the show is morphing from Arrow to Parenthood.

Early reports about the new season talked about how the team of bad guys being put together were being done so as a match for Team Arrow and they said Anatoly Knyazev was the equal to Oliver. That didn't make sense to me at the time because Anatoly is not a physical match for Oliver. He wasn't more of an emotional match than say Black Siren. But after the second episode of the season, we see that he's a match because he knows Oliver and what buttons to press. And more importantly, he knows which ones not to press. Oliver knows he abused their friendship and that Anatoly has suffered because of it.

What has impressed me so far is that we haven't learned who Michael Emerson will be playing. The obvious choice would seem to be Cayden James, the head of Helix that Felicity helped free last season. They never showed his face so it could be him. And it made sense that Richard Dragon/Diaz would put together a team specifically to go after Team Arrow and recruiting James to go up against Felicity and Curtis made sense. But I'm starting to think that Emerson's character will be the big bad, not Dragon. And if that's the case, then what motivation would James have to go up against Green Arrow?

I think they'll spend the first part of the season building the team, dealing with the Slade Wilson story and the crossover before we start getting any real answers to who Emerson is playing and why they are going after Oliver.
