Pacific Rim Uprising Director Says Crossover With The Monster-Verse Is Possible

At some point before Pacific Rim Uprising comes out, someone is going to ask if it's in the same universe as Godzilla or Kong: Skull Island. It would make sense since they both would exist in the same world since Pacific Rim proves that giant monsters do exist at least on some level. When speaking to Collider Pacific Rim Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight denied any Easter Eggs between the series but said there have been discussions about crossing the two series over.

"I won't say there's an Easter Egg but there's been a lot of discussion about that possibility [of crossing over]. Look I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join Legendary's Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we've talked about is that could happen, it's always a possibility. It's by far not a certainty; it's merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself I would love to see that happen."

While at New York Comic Con, DeKnight and the entire cast made it very clear that is this is hopefully a first step to kicking off an entire series of movies. DeKnight says that Pacific Rim Uprising doesn't end of a cliffhanger but if they want to do a third movie the door is open.

"Oh we definitely leave it open to another installment. The tricky thing with something like this is you want to not end on a cliffhanger. You don't want an Empire Strikes Back cliffhanger unless you know you're gonna do a third movie—you want to leave it open but also wrap it up. So that's very much what we did on this movie. It has a definitive ending but very much open to the next chapter."

The Monster-Verse is still very much in the early days so unless the studios think both series could get a significant edge if they crossover this is probably years away from happening. Still, the fact that there is a reality where we get to see a Jaeger fight alongside or against Godzilla is the timeline we should be striving for.

Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat.

Pacific Rim Uprising, directed by Steven S. DeKnight, stars John Boyega, Tian Jing, Scott Eastwood, Adria Arjona, Charlie Day, and Burn Gorman. It will be released March 23rd, 2018.
