Lucifer Season 3 Episode 3 Review: Maze Continues To Be The Best

I apologize for a lack of review for episode two. I blame a rather horrible strain of con crud from NYCC.

Lucifer season three, episode three, is a nice little standalone episode that focuses on Mazikeen.

Summary: Lucifer Morningstar has decided he's had enough of being the dutiful servant in Hell and decides to spend some time on Earth to better understand humanity. He settles in Los Angeles — the City of Angels.

We knew going into season three of Lucifer that there were a few "anthology" episodes that were shot for season two but never made it in. These episodes would be shown as part of the beginning of season three and with episode three we got the first of them. This is an episode that focuses almost entirely on Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt) which is just lovely. Maze is one of the best supporting characters in the series but she doesn't get the right amount of character development. In defense of the writers she seems like a tough character to get a handle on but this episode did her right. Maze spends the episode tracking a bounty in Canada and as Chloe (Lauren German) and Lucifer (Tom Ellis) slowly start to realize that something isn't right.

The show made the decision to have Chloe and Maze become roommates last season and it was a creative decision that could have fallen flat. However, the writer have found some really fascinating things to focus on such how maze interacts with Trixie (Scarlett Estevez). Despite her hard exterior Maze is always soft around Trixie in a way that's just fantastic to watch but she also bounces off of Chloe very well as well. Maze also has a fantastic relationship with Linda (Rachael Harris) that we get to see more of in this episode. About halfway through the episode telegraphs where you think it is heading and it was groan worthy but by the end it went somewhere so much better.

As a standalone episode this could be called filler because nothing moves forward with Sinnerman plot line that we'll be following for season three. However, Maze is a character that rarely gets an episode to herself and the characters are the reason that fans have stuck with this show. It was nice to see Maze take on the staring role and the final scene hints that this won't be the last time we see this particular plot line explored. The scene could have been added to link the episode to the Sinnerman plot or perhaps this is our B story for the season.

Lucifer managed to do some what many other shows have a hard time doing; making a decent filler episode. They took a character that needed some extra development and focused on her to keep viewers engaged. Most of them wouldn't even know that this episode was shot out of order save for a few small details
