A Roll Of The Blank Dice: A Quick Review Of 'Fighting Fantasy Legends'

Fighting Fantasy Legends is a fantasy adventure game where you get to choose your own adventure within the mythical land before you. This game is based on the Fighting Fantasy series, and this version actually started out as a smartphone app and was adapted for PC and released on Steam, which is why you have a drop-down of everything you're doing.

The game starts by letting you choose your own character from a small batch of cards, each with their own health and abilities. You'll then walk around to different locations on the map and pick what you'd like to do.

You can enter a tavern and choose small quests like collecting taxes or delivering flowers, or take on bigger adventures like slaying monsters or hunting down criminals. A lot of the locations are automatic as the game operates a lot like a board game, forcing you down a particular path. There are times where you can pick a direction, but once you choose a quest, everything is pretty straightforward.

You'll receive a number of dice to use in combat depending on the level your character is, which will aid you in defeating foes or being successful on tasks. Once tasks are complete, you'll be rewarded with XP, gold, and other tidbits of info to help you become bigger and better.

The downside to the game is in the dice rolling. As you'll see, the dice are a combination of marked and blank sides. More often than not, you'll find yourself rolling mostly blank sides, which can be frustrating and deadly. Sure, you'll get enemies with the same scenario and you'll manage to come out on top, but you frequently pay a price with your health and it makes the game tedious to continually heal yourself just go to through the process all over again. This is especially frustrating when you lose all your stamina, black out, and discover one of your dice has an "X" on it where rolling an "X" is an automatic fail. This mechanic, while I can see it balancing the world out to a degree, is a pain in the ass and doesn't need to be here.

Fighting Fantasy Legends is pretty awesome for what it is. It can be tedious at times, but that just means you need to pick and choose your adventures a little more carefully than normal. At some point in time, you'll end up coming to a decision of whether to continue with the character you have or seek out a totally new adventure with someone new just to see if the game has more to offer than the eventual end journey, or if you'd like to see how things pan out with different people. Either way, you'll probably have a good time with it.
