Sony Fast Tracks Men In Black Spinoff From Iron Man Writers

Sony Pictures is reported to have fast tracked a spinoff of the Men In Black franchise. Deadline reports that the studio has set May 17th, 2019 released date for an untitled film scripted by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum (Iron Man). Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are not expected to reprise their roles of Jay and Kay, but the film will acknowledge the characters and build on that universe.

The script is said to focus on new characters going after new villains and have a more global setting than the previous films. They're likening it to the way Jurassic World expanded on the Jurassic Park franchise. The film will be produced by Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald, and Steven Spielberg. They're currently hunting a top level director.

This is a departure from the talked about mash-up between MiB and 21 Jump Street that planned to put Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in the black suits. That idea is still in production, but this spinoff seems to be moving faster and is likely to come out first.

Parkes confirmed the report, saying:

"It's so rare to get to the end of the script and know you're holding a movie in your hands, but Art and Matt have written a spinoff that somehow is true to the core of the MiB world and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place."
