There's No Online Co-Op Mode In The 'Secret Of Mana' Remake

If you played the original Secret Of Mana, you may remember that the game has a few new additions that were innovative for the time and seem almost necessary today. One of those options was three-player co-op, which you didn't really see in SNES titles, let alone RPG games. Flash forward to today where gamers young and old were hoping for good news that the remake of Secret Of Mana would incorporate an online aspect so you could do online co-op with friends who had the game. Sadly, that is not to be.

Game Informer recently posted a story where they deconstruct what they know of the remake from Square Enix, and in that post, they reveal that there's no online mode. The main gameplay experience of interacting with three friends on a couch together is something the designers and publisher wanted to keep intact so that newer gamers could have those moments just as older gamers did, while those who remember the game can buddy up again and take on the challenges once more. As someone who has played the game, I totally understand their thinking. But as a modern gamer, I can see this being a turnoff for some people. Here's a brief quote from the piece that's worth a quick read. What do you think about it?

"You have three players sitting next to each other on the couch with three controllers – all playing at the same time. I think a lot of the enjoyment that people have in their memories of the original game relies on that playstyle. We felt it was best to have that recreated in the same way."
