Star Wars: Episode IX – No Plans For Rian Johnson To Direct

When it was announced that Colin Trevorrow had left Star Wars: Episode IX, there were a lot of questions. This was the second time a director has left a Star Wars project this year and it made people wonder what was going on. The movie is set to begin production in early 2018, so the next question people were asking was: who will end up replacing Trevorrow?

One of the names that shot to the top of the list was Star War: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. The Last Jedi has had almost no bad press, and Lucasfilm seems very happy with the movie he has made. Johnson has said he would love to do another Star Wars movie, so fans and industry professionals alike thought it seemed like a logical choice.

Star Wars: Episode IX – No Plans For Rian Johnson To Direct

It turns out that Johnson probably isn't going to direct, at least judging by his recent comments. While appearing on a Japanese television show to promote The Last Jedi, video provided by Oricon (via Cinema Blend), Johnson was asked if he was going to direct Episode IX:

"It was never in the plan for me to direct Episode IX, so I don't know what's going to happen with it. But for me, I was entirely focused on Episode VIII and having this experience. Now I'm just thinking about putting the movie out there and seeing how audiences respond to it. So no, I'm not really thinking about that right now. Whoever does it, I'm going to be really excited to be an audience member again, and to sit down and see what the next filmmaker has to show us and where this story ends up going."

So it sounds like Johnson probably isn't going to direct Episode IX, despite how much everyone seems to want it. It's kind of a shame since he seems to really get the world of Star Wars and clearly has a lot of love for the franchise. However, now it means we can get some more new blood into the mix. Perhaps someone other than a white man? That would be nice.

Summary: Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, and Adam Driver. It will be released on December 15th.
