Drew Brees Starts 2017 With An Uncertain Future

Could this be the final season with the New Orleans Saints for quarterback Drew Brees? The 38-year old helped turned the fledging franchise around and took them to their first and only Superbowl victory and he's playing under the final year of his contract, which means the team will need to resign him or move on at the end of this season.

Most of the time there is a third option, the franchise tag, and in a situation like this… tag Brees for one more year could be a smart move if they drafted an heir apparent in the spring. Because I don't think Chase Daniel or Taysom Hill are the long term answer there. But the Saint don't have that option. ESPN is reporting that sources have told them Brees has a rarely used clause in his contract prohibiting the team from using the franchise tag. Which means, if another team wants to lure Brees away, they could.

Last year, Brees lead the NFL in passing yards for the seventh time with 5,208. He and the Saints start their 2017 season on Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings. Brees and the Saints aggreed to a contract extension last year, paying the quarterback $24.25 million for this season so they wouldn't have to risk him becoming a free agent. There are no negotiations for a new contract going on at the moment.
