Which Netflix Shows Act As "Gateways" To The Marvel Series?

Which Netflix shows were people watching before they decide to jump on the Marvel Netflix train? USA Today has figured that out, and perhaps you could use this as a "suggestion" list for your next show to watch if you're a fan of the series.

First, we have Daredevil, whose titular character was probably the best known of the four Marvel Netflix series thanks to that Ben Affleck movie. People who watched Bloodline, Breaking Bad, Dexter, and House of Cards — shows that featured anti-heroes — were the ones most likely to watch Daredevil.

Next we have Jessica Jones, which was probably the riskier (at the time) of the Netflix series due to its extreme content. Jessica Jones delves into the idea of consent and features a great female lead. However, despite that extremely dark content, it was the next step for people who watched comedies with strong women such as Friends, Master of None, and Orange Is the New Black. Talk about tonal juxtaposition.

The Defenders

Luke Cage was a landmark show with its unapologetic themes about life as a black man (who just happens to be bulletproof). That is some pretty heavy stuff, and people who watched Luke Cage were coming from shows that looked at the dark side of life such as Black Mirror, The Walking Dead, and the documentary Amanda Knox. Luke Cage also garnered interest from fans of the mega-hit Stranger Things.

Finally, Iron Fist, which is probably the most divisive of the Marvel Netflix series. While the overall "decline" of the Marvel shows felt like it started on the back half of Daredevil Season 2, Iron Fist was the first series that showed the infallible Marvel and Disney could stumble. It has a lot of themes of growing up and identity, so it's not surprising that fans of shows like 13 Reasons Why, Love, and The 100 were the ones to watch Iron Fist next. That also seems to indicate that, of all the series, Iron Fist is the one that has appealed to a younger demographic compared to the other Netflix shows.

Todd Yellin, Netflix's vice president of product innovation, said:

"These different lead-ins show that there is unlikely alliances to different people's tastes about the kinds of stuff they're going to like. The human brain is very complex and taste comes out of that. It's not like you're into one thing and that's all you ever watch."

Maybe that's true, but it's still an interesting thing to look at. In the days of school starting up and nothing being in the movie theaters, maybe it's time to look into a new show or two.
