NFL Round-Up: Chicago Bears' Cameron Meredith Injures Knee

We're going to kick off today's round-up with a few injury follow-ups from yesterday, a new batch of injuries, and even a trade — all of this within in two weeks of the start of the regular season. Many folks are heading off to do their fantasy football drafts (myself included), so the latest injury updates are key to knowing who to avoid and who to take. And breaking bad news for Chicago Bears fans.

Chicago Bears

Yesterday it was feared that New England Patriots' Julian Edelman was done for the year with a torn ACL, and that Spencer Ware of the Kansas City Chiefs was going to be out awhile with with a strained PCL. An MRI confirmed that Edelman is done for the year, but an MRI showed that Ware's injury was worse than expected. A torn PCL has ended the running backs 2017 season before it has begun.

During last night's game, the Dallas Cowboys lost starting middle linebacker Anthony Hitchens to what the team fears is a torn ACL in his right knee. They will need an MRI to confirm, but the season looks to be done for Hitchens, which showed a lot of promise after having 104 tackles last year. The team could move veteran Sean Lee over or go with second year player Jaylon Smith, but Smith has only 30 pro snaps under his belt after missing most of his rookie year with a knee injury.

The New York Jets dismal quarterback competition took a hit last night as their own lineman Ben Braden rolled up on quarterback Bryce Petty's knee and sprained his MCL. Petty was the only bright spot in a QB competition that also includes Christian Hackenberg, who has shown poorly, and veteran Josh McCown, who hasn't been playing and is rumored to have a "dead arm."

Another injured signal caller last night was the Buffalo Bills' Tyrod Taylor, who got his bell rung when his head hit the turf during a sack. Taylor is now in the concussion protocol with no real idea of how long. The team used fifth round pick Nathan Peterman after that. He had recently moved into the number two slot behind Taylor, passing journeyman quarterback T.J. Yates. The team will have to decide if they need to add another arm before the season starts.

And in an interesting trade, the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets swap secondary depth. The Eagles are sending fourth-year safety Terrence Brooks to the Jets in exchange for fourth-year cornerback Dexter McDougle. Brooks was selected one pick ahead of McDougle in the 2014 NFL draft. Neither are expected to start, but Brooks will likely get more playing time in the shallow Jets' roster, where McDougle will provide depth until Sidney Jones is ready to play.

And just in as I was typing up the round-up, the Chicago Bears' top wide receiver, Cameron Meredith, has been taken off the field on a cart due to a knee injury. Meredith was the top receiver for the team last season and with the departure of Alshon Jeffrey, was expected to have an even bigger year.  Depending on the results of an MRI, this could put a lot of pressure on guys like Kevin White, Kendall Wright, and Victor Cruz to step up.
