Bleeding Cool Bestseller List – 27th August 2017 – "Sticking It Out To See How The Train Wreck Ends…"

This is the Top Ten Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait to the weekend to get this week's comics. We salute you, and the keenness you bring to your passion.

The Batman, Superman and Flash titles all push Secret Empire down below them, while Generations is getting a little more vim as the issue is revealed to actually have a point. But it's Nightwing: New World Order and Weapon X that may be the more surprising success stories right now, outselling Batman/Shadow and X-Men Gold…

A strong MARVEL week taking 7 out of the 10 best sellers with DC snatching the other 3 and no INDEPENDENT publishers able to even make the list this week (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #18 came in at 30th place

The Hard Place #1 by Image Comics was already selling well because of how many crime comic fans we have, and was bolstered by having artist Nic Rummel doing a signing at both of our store locations on Wednesday. Generations had some genuine interest drummed up by Jason Aaron.

On a calmer week of comics, Detective was our bestselling title, just barely beating out the Flash and Batman/Shadow. For some Detective perspective, we sold more than 6 times more Metal 1 over this week's Detective by this time last week, but this week still wasn't bad. Redneck was our top indy book and Plastic was our only top 20 other indy book at spot 10. Other than Edge of Venomverse 5 in the middle of our top ten, we only had 4 more Marvel books in our top twenty this week at FFF, mostly in the last few spots. Generations (Thor) weekly series continues to sell okay at best numbers, but this week, it was beat out by the Manhunter Special, Suicide Squad and Hal Jordan! Not giving me a lot of faith about Marvel Legacy or Marvel's focus on lenticular covers for the whole line over actual content. People do seem excited for Venomverse and people are digging this Weapon X Batch story as well. DC still has 13 of our top 20 this week and everyone seems psyched for the Metal tie-ins and spinoffs.

Secret Empire #9 juuuuuust stole the top spot on our bestsellers list from Thor Generations. They were pretty much neck and neck, though. I think The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #8 surprised just about everyone by actually coming out a month after #7. To be clear, it was a nice surprise, and it easily made our top 10 this week. We always like seeing new #1s in our top 10, and we were particularly happy to see Carly Usdin and Nina Vakueva's Hi-Fi Fight Club #1 make it this week. I mean, it's about a "teen girl vigilante fight club" in 1998. How could we not love it?

Our sales pattern for the month is holding, as once again our Top 10 is locked down by the Big 2. Our top book is the penultimate issue Secret Empire, while our second place is held by Nightwing New Order #1. Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man, Chip Zdarsky's lighter, more humor-oriented Spidey ongoing continues to sell well. Meanwhile, DC's core titles continue steady "Rebirth"-era sales. While much of that relaunch heat has died off at this point, we're certainly selling far more copies of Action than we were two years ago.

The bottom third of the list is dominated by various permutations of Marvel's Merry Mutants, proving their staying power despite it sometimes seeming like Marvel is unable to figure out exactly what they want to do *do* with them.

Marvel took the top 3? Been a while. Although they don't make any in the next 7.

School has started making for new customers while old ones leave for college. Lots of surprises. Secret Empire made it in the top ten which shocked me. Lots of people complained about the last issue but they all came back for this issue. I even asked them about it and they all said basically they are going to stick it out to see how the trainwreck ends. Nightwing the new order sold out on Wednesday. Thankfully more copies were available for reorder. Look Marvel, another non Star Wars limited series that sells. Cable was a hit with the issue also selling out on Wednesday. Had copies of of Hal Jordan that had printing issues. Nothing like not being able to read the word balloons on a page. And Suicide Squad sales took a hit thanks to the covers not being put on correctly. Marvel got two in our top ten. The rest went all to DC. XO Manowar did the best for us out of the non big two publishers.

Marvel had a better week, placing three titles in our store's Top 'Ten this week–but Generations: Unworthy Thor and Mighty Thor wasn't one of them, unfortunately. Readers who tried one Generations oneshot aren't coming back for any others; the most common response we hear is that the books don't seem to matter at all, so they'll just skip them.
