David Harbour Explains How His Hellboy Will Be Different From Ron Perlman's
The Hellboy reboot is in the process of casting, and is likely to start filming by the end of the year or early next year. Thus far the production has a great cast and a very interesting choice for a director. It's been said that it's going to be much closer to a horror movie than the previous two entries in the series. Those previous entries could be a problem for the movie, as fans don't seem eager to embrace someone else playing Hellboy. David Harbour, who will be playing Hellboy in this reboot, talked on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Collider) about what he is bringing to the character:
"It's unique and odd. There are things that I'm gonna do that are different. Hellboy is the same character from the comics and from what Ron did, there are certain things that are the same thing, but I do think that—I don't know, there's a different approach because I sort of highlight different things, I think, than Ron does. Ron sort of embraces this machismo in himself and in Hellboy, and I really like it and it's super fun and it's a super fun performance, but I think Hellboy has a certain psycho dynamic where occasionally he has to prove that he's the lion, has to roar, and I think he struggles with his own masculinity. But I don't think he needs that as much as maybe those other movies. I have a bit of a different take on his capability or his slickness. I sort of think that for me he's a little less skilled at constructing that persona."
There are fans that believe no one should play Hellboy except for Ron Perlman, and that is a hurdle that Harbour will have to get over if he's to succeed. It looks like he's trying to put his own spin on the character instead of just doing the same thing Perlman did, which is the right idea. The people involved in this project seem excited to work on and passion can save a movie.
Hellboy, directed by Neil Marshall, will star David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Sasha Lane, and Ian McShane. It currently has a 2018 release date.
