Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Rian Johnson: "It Was The Most Fun I've Ever Had Writing"

There's nothing better than the moment when you love what you do with your life. For director and writer Rian Johnson that was working on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In a new interview on The Star Wars Story (@2:30) (via The Hollywood Reporter) Johnson talks about the writing process for the movie and how having a team helped.

"Once I actually jumped into it, it was the most fun I've ever had writing," he said. "It was the least scary process. I think part of it was, I wasn't alone for the process. I was writing on my own, but I moved up to San Francisco for a few months, and every few weeks I would go in and sit down with [Lucasfilm's] Kiri Hart and her whole story group team, and I would just put everything I was thinking of up on the white board and just bounce it off everyone — just see what everyone thought. Having that kind of gut check — not just for, 'Wait, don't do that,' but for, 'Yeah, you can do that. If that's interesting to you, take that path' — having that permission from somebody, I think that had a lot to do with it."

As a creator it's important to have other people around to help point you in the right direction. This is why story groups and work shopping exists. It's also one aspect of writing that isn't talked about as much and should have a bigger emphasis on.

Summary: Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, and Adam Driver. It will be released on December 15th.
