Maybe it’ll take retired sheriff Alan Pangborn to keep the peace in Castle Rock, as Hulu announced Tuesday that actor Scott Glenn (Daredevil, The Leftovers) has been cast as the iconic Stephen King character. The veteran actor joins previously announced castmates Andre Holland (Moonlight), Sissy Spacek (Carrie), Melanie Lynskey (Beautiful Creatures), Jane Levy (Don’t Breathe) and Bill Skarsgard (It) in the 10-episode Hulu series from Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
Hulu describes Castle Rock as:
“A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, Castle Rock combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. The fictional Maine town of Castle Rock has figured prominently in King’s literary career: Cujo, The Dark Half, IT and Needful Things, as well as novella The Body and numerous short stories such as Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption are either set there or contain references to Castle Rock. Castle Rock is an original suspense/thriller — a first-of-its-kind reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories.”
Glenn’s Alan Pangborn is a beloved character in King lore who stood witness to some of the darkest years and moments in Castle Rock’s history; and was a central character in Needful Things and The Dark Half. In fact, 1993 was a very popular year for the character: Ed Harris was cast as Pangborn in the film version of Needful Things while Michael Rooker portrayed the sheriff in George Romero’s adaptation of The Dark Half.
Glenn will be a joined by a number of the town’s friends and foes. Lynskey will play Molly Strand, a woman with a rare health issue who’s barely making ends meet as a real estate agent in a town where every home holds a deep, dark secret. Holland plays Henry, a death-row attorney with a unique and complicated past with Castle Rock; Spacek plays Ruth Deaver, Henry’s adoptive mother and retired professor whose aging insight into the darker places of Castle Rock’s past might hold the key to uncovering the truth; Levy plays Jackie, the death-obsessed self-appointed historian of Castle Rock and (possible) ally for Henry; and Skarsgard plays a young man with a very specific legal issue.
Castle Rock is based on characters and stories created by King, with Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason developing the project for television and serving as executive producers alongside J.J. Abrams, Ben Stephenson, and Liz Glotzer.
