Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Rey's Answers Won't Make Her Life Easier

The world of Star Wars has never been completely black and white, despite the existence of "good guys" and "bad guys". Rogue One gave us a look at the Empire and Alliance in different ways by presenting that the Alliance does terrible things sometimes, and characters like Bodhi and Finn remind us that there are good people in the Empire/First Order, as well.

The idea of lineage some how dictating someone's future is an idea Star Wars has stomped on thoroughly. Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader despite his mother loving him, Luke and Leia fought for freedom despite Vader being their father, and Kylo Ren fell to the Dark Side despite having Han Solo and Leia as parents. Daisy Ridley spoke to Entertainment Weekly about Rey's linage and how knowing doesn't make things easier:

"You can always look for answers and that doesn't mean that the rest of your life is so easy. It's not like, oh, I know who my parents are so now everything falls into shape, especially in the Star Wars world."

If Rey finds out she's a Skywalker, is that really going to change much? Not really, though it might give her a sense of being. If she turns out to be related to no one in the main cast (what I personally hope for) then that's okay, too, because it ultimately doesn't change anything. Ridley continued:

"Yes, it would potentially change her mind, or at least give her a little bit more peace in moving forward. But ultimately what's coming is coming, and whatever abilities she has are there. So, personally, I think it's less important than even she may think."

Ridley went on to say that the best part of this universe is that everything isn't black and white, that good people can go bad, and bad people can redeemed:

"What's wonderful is it's not so cut and dry, who's good and who's bad and that's not me saying, 'Oh, my God, some people are gonna go bad.' There's always room for bad people to make good decisions and vice versa. Again, that could be nothing to do with your parents and it could be everything to do with your parents."

These interviews seem to be telling fans to stop putting so much emphasis on Rey's linage and focus more on where the character is going in the future. No matter what explanation we get, some fans will be satisfied, and some will be let down.

Summary: Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, and Adam Driver. It will be released on December 15th.
