[SPOILER] Is The Main Villain For However Many 'Avatar' Sequels There Will Be

We know that there are four sequels to the movie Avatar on the way, but aside from returning cast members, we don't know anything about what the stories for these sequels is going to be. Director James Cameron is taking an interesting way of promoting these movies: telling people that certain characters are going to be around for all four movies.

That seems like something of a spoiler that sucks all the tension out of the production, as it basically confirms that X person can't die unless they're going to keep bringing people back from the dead, which also sucks all the tension out of the production because death becomes meaningless. It also means that if you're trying to stay spoiler-free for these movies, it's probably best not to read this article.

In keeping with the spirit of basically spoiling these movies, Cameron has revealed, in a new interview with Empire, that Stephen Lang's Colonel Quartich will be returning, despite taking arrows to the chest, as the primary antagonist for the series:

"The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it's pretty much the same characters. There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I'm taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it's not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There's not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherfucker through all four movies. He is so good and he just gets better. I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park."

In a truly brilliant moment that describes all of this so perfectly, Empire writer James Dyer describes the undertaking that Cameron and his cast are taking on:

"Cameron's mammoth undertaking, shooting four sequels back-to-back is not only ambitious, it's a feat of scheduling that Stephen Lang himself described as 'a Mongoian clusterfuck'. Cameron's inspiration for said clusterfuck? One Peter Jackson."

Well done, sir.

It turns out that when everyone was asking "why do we need four more Avatar movies?" now we have a person to blame aside from just Cameron and the box office:

"I said 'It's your fault I'm doing this, motherfucker! It's one big story. But I would say a little bit different from The Lord Of The Rings, which you knew was a trilogy and that allowed you to accept a sort of truncated ending for movies one and two and then a fulfilment. This is a greater narrative broken up into four complete stories."

And people thought shooting two Avengers movies back to back was an insane idea.

Avatar 2 will be released on December 18th, 2020. Avatar 3 will open December 17th, 2021, Avatar 4 is set of December 20th, 2024, and Avatar 5 will open December 19th, 2025.
