Stephen King Would Like 'The Dark Tower' Sequel To Be R-Rated

A new movie based on a Stephen King book is coming out and Collider recently got to sit down with one of the masters himself about the production. One of the things that was brought up was the idea for a sequel and what King would like to see from one.

Well there are things that I think the hardcore fans are going to wish was in the movie and all I can say is, if the movie's a success, there will be a sequel. I would love to see those doors into our world and there's some of that in this movie. I would love to see Roland on the beach with those lobster monstrosities and I understand the rationale behind the movie, that it's PG-13. I totally signed off on that.

Despite the fact that he would have wanted an R-rating he understands why the studio wanted a PG-13. The idea that a R-rated movie can make money is a fairly new one and some studios executives are still wrapping their heads around the idea.

I think it's the right thing to do. I want as many people as possible to attend for all kinds of reasons; part of it having to do with the dynamic between the gunslinger and the boy because I think that's a father-son relationship, but I would love to see the next picture be R. Because I stink that's sort of where we're coming from now, where the movies need to go. For a long time, PG-13 was the safe spot to go and when pictures were R, studio executives would say "Well, we know that this movie is going to make 20-30% less money because we're going to exclude a market, a prime…part of the movie going public. I think movies like Deadpool and Logan to some degree.

Whether or not we're going to see another The Dark Tower movie is still up in the air. The movie is not fairing well critically but the buzz is it still might take the opening weekend. The budget isn't very big, $60 million, and there hasn't been a ton of marketing so if the movie manages to gross over $100 million it might warrant a sequel. We'll just have to see.

Summary: The Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, roams an Old West-like landscape where "the world has moved on" in pursuit of the man in black. Also searching for the fabled Dark Tower, in the hopes that reaching it will preserve his dying world.

The Dark Tower, directed by Nikolaj Arcel, stars Idris Elba, Katheryn Winnick, Matthew McConaughey, Jackie Earl Haley, and Tom Taylor. It will be released on August 4th.
