Jackie Earle Haley Talks Alita: Battle Angel: "A Completely New Experience For Me."

There is an Alita: Battle Angel movie coming out next year that seems to have been forgotten in the mass of releases for 2018. We haven't seen anything from it yet but we do know it's a passion project for writer James Cameron and it's being directed by Robert Rodriguez. It also has a great cast including Eiza González who is blowing up now thanks to Baby Driver, Mahershala Ali who also went from zero to a million thanks to Moonlight and Luke Cage, and veteran actor Jackie Earle Haley. Screen Rant caught up with Haley at Comic-Con International while he was doing promo work for The Tick and asked him about the movie.

"What can I tell you about it? That was a completely new experience for me. And I'll tell you why. At my age, I feel like I have done everything in production. It's like I know what's going on in just about every department and the director. You know I am a director as well. And so I get on this thing and my character is completely CGI. I am playing a very massive robot dude and it's a really good script. It was great working with Robert. Met James and he is a sweetheart, but working with Robert and the cast was really fun. Everybody did a good job, but it was a really different trip doing motion capture. I am wearing a helmet and a bodysuit the whole time and sometimes there was actual movie cameras and sometimes there was none. But even when there was movie cameras, there were other cameras pointing at me for reference and infrared things everywhere. You can find out how they did it online, but it was a trip doing that. Yeah. Different. Really different."

The movie is less than a year away now so we should expect to see some footage sooner rather than later. This is a huge project with an even bigger budget, $200 million, in a year with a ton of huge budget movies. 20th Century Fox must have a lot of faith in Cameron and Rodriguez to greenlight a budget that big. We'll have to see how it all looks soon.

Alita: Battle Angel, directed by Robert Rodriguez, stars Eiza González, Jennifer Connelly, Michelle Rodriguez, Mahershala Ali, Christoph Waltz, and Jackie Earle Haley. It will be released on July 20, 2018.
