Hackers Threaten More HBO Leaks

Coming through from Variety, it's been revealed that the hackers who have been giving HBO headaches may not yet be through with the network.

These hackers, who leaked a number of unaired episodes of a variety of HBO shows as well as other data from the network earlier this week, are threatening to release more of their shows onto the internet. They revealed this in an automated email response to Variety, which said that they plan to, "release the leak gradually every week." They said their next release of HBO episodes will be "Sunday 12:00 GMT." They claim to have 1.5 terabytes of data from HBO that they can leak to the internet.

HBO CEO Richard Plepler seems to be under the impression that the email system was not compromised, but security personnel do say that thousands of documents are missing at this time.

In all reality, HBO probably is probably more concerned with the company information that may have been released as opposed to the episodes themselves. Pirates get their hands on films and television programming early constantly. It's kind of the price of doing business in the internet age. Not too long ago, there were the Netflix hackers who tried to hold the shows they got their hands on to ransom, to which Netflix responded to with a resounding "go ahead and leak 'em."

The primary difference here is that these hackers may have gotten some pertinent company information, which could let some cats out of the bag that HBO may not want out and, once they are out, can't be put back in. The Sony leak of years back comes to mind here, and Sony got a lot of negative publicity out of that one. The other difference is that these hackers made a big deal out of this hack, where most pirates try to accomplish this kind of thing subtlety so HBO doesn't shut down their distribution websites. In that regard, one site that offered access to the leaked episodes has likely already been shut down, as it has been inaccessible for two days.

I guess we'll see what they have up their sleeve next this Sunday. Maybe they have something big. Maybe they're full of crap. Maybe someone will crack down on them before then. We'll just have to wait and see.
