'Shazam!' Director David Sandberg Talks "Getting To Know The Character"

When it was revealed that Shazam! was going to be the next DC movie to go into production people were a little confused. When you have movies that have leads that are already cast, such as Cyborg, The Flash or even a sequel like Suicide Squad 2 you'd think those would be the primary focus. There is probably someone lined up for the role already but we don't know who that is just yet. What we do know comes from director David Sandberg who recently spoke to Moviefone about the production including confirming that it will be a New Line movie not a Warner Bros movie. .

"This will be very different than what I've done in the feature space, because it's not a horror movie and it's a much lighter tone. But it's something that I look forward to trying out, even though I plan to return to horror in some fashion," Sandberg explained. "My background, back in Sweden, before I started doing horror shorts, I was doing animated comedy shorts. It's not totally alien to me to have more of a comedy approach. I look forward to taking that on in a feature."

Someone taking on a completely different genre isn't unheard of when it comes to comic book movies. The Russo Brothers and Patty Jenkins both didn't have huge blockbusters under their belt before they took on their respective properties. Now two of them are taking on a project with a billion dollar budget and the other might have single-handedly justified the continued existence of the DCEU.

'Shazam!' Director David Sandberg Talks "Getting To Know The Character"Not only is this a new genre for Sandberg but it's also a character he's not entirely familiar with.

"It wasn't a character I grew up with. It was published in Sweden, where I'm from, in the '70s, so it's a little before my time. So I only knew him from the Justice League," Sandberg admitted. "It's not until now that I'm getting into the comics and reading a lot of the old ones, the Geoff Johns ones, 'The Power of Shazam,' and looking at a bunch of animation. So I'm really getting to know the character."

There's nothing wrong with that and he appears to be doing his research into the character as it moves into production. Thus far the best DCEU movie is the one that felt true to the character and if Sandberg and writer Henry Gayden can accomplish that then we'll probably get a decent movie.

Shazam!, directed by David Sandberg, will be written by Henry Gayden. It will be released on April 5, 2019.
