GameStop Proving They're Still A Corporation, Will Be Open On Thanksgiving

There's no better way to tell your employees that you don't care about them than to take away a holiday. GameStop has joined those ranks as they sent out a memo to their employees yesterday, letting them know that all their locations would be open on Thanksgiving Day for the "impending rush" to buy Nintendo Switch consoles. Rather than waiting until Black Friday for other retail stores to sell them at a bargain, the plan is to be open before anyone else so that people think of them first rather than waiting in line elsewhere.

If you wish to call that a smart business plan, you're more than welcome to your opinion on the situation. But I don't believe the employees of GameStop would share your sentiments. It has become almost tradition for major retailers to remain closed on Thanksgiving since the Black Friday rush is essentially all-hands-on-deck the following day. GameStop cannot expect to be immune to this trend as there are millions who just aren't going to leave their house on the holiday for a deal on one system at one location, which means all their employees will be in the same boat that Friday as well.

What kind of backlash the company will get from everyone involved is yet to be seen, if anything happens at all. But considering how employees tend to rebel against company changes in the past and make their decisions public, it would not surprise me if the complete staff of multiple stores suddenly called in sick the day before.
