Avatar Takes Their Big Sale To Comic Book Store Customers

Posted by July 31, 2017 Comment

Avatar Press is the publisher of Bleeding Cool. Just wanted to say that up top. Because this is a news story I would cover whatever the ownership. Avatar, publishers of Crossed, Providence and Uber are currently running a line-wide 75% sale on ComiXology. Which is pretty massive but not unheard of. Publishers often discount comics digitally.

But doing it in print is harder. You get trade paperbacks which can technically work as a discount on the original printed issues. Some publishers issue $1 first issues a few months after the launch of a popular series to help people catch up. Some also dicsount first trade paperbacks to $10 for similar reasons.

Behind the scenes, some publishers offer massive discounts to retailers. Those discounts can be passed onto readers – or not. It’s down to them. Most often stores are happy to take the increased margin with an idea to maybe passing some of that discount on, come the holidays.

But, with the new Diamond Previews and comics shipping in October, Avatar Press are taking those book discounts directly to comic store customers to order themselves. Not only that, but advertising what they are doing on the Customer Order Form that accompanies copies of Diamond Previews.

So, for October, rather than running any new titles, they are running listings for heavily discounted collections, each at $5.99. Including work by Alan Moore, Anthony Johnston, George RR Martin, Garth Ennis, Warren Ellis, Si Spurrier, Jason Burrows, John McCrea , David Lapham and more.

Here are the details cut and pasted from the order form…

FREAKANGELS TP VOL 01 SP ED (MR)
(W) Warren Ellis (A/CA) Paul Duffield
Warren Ellis’ hugely popular web comic, FREAKANGELS, is here, collected in print for the first time in this gorgeous, full-color trade paperback! The first arc of the ongoing, post-apocalyptic saga is a must-have for fans of the online series, or a perfect starting point for new readers! Twenty-three years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment. Six years later, the world ended. This is the story of what happened next. So welcome to Whitechapel, some years from now, just barely above ground in a flooded England, where a clan of eleven strange people with purple eyes — the Freakangels — have carved out some sort of a life for themselves. A life that starts to show big cracks when a girl called Alice from Manchester turns up with a shotgun and a grievance, having met the lost, prodigal last Freakangel, who had very different ideas about what they should do with themselves and this flooded future England. Because the Freakangels have a big secret: Something very bad is their fault. Ellis’ ongoing story of a flooded London is beautifully illustrated in jaw-dropping detail by Paul Duffield, and every page is as much a work of art as it is a compelling and multi-layered story. Gravel Volume 1 features the first eight issues (#0-7) of this on-going series from Warren Ellis and co-writer Mike Wolfer with art by Raulo Caceres and Oscar Jimenez, as well as a special cover gallery! Long-buried and lost in antiquity, a unique book of magic once existed, filled with such extraordinary and arcane spells, supernatural rites, and inherent power that its possessor would be either unequaled, or driven irrevocably insane. Recently unearthed, the Sigsand Manuscript has been divided into six pieces and distributed among the Minor Seven, Britain’s great Occult Detectives. With the Sigsand in their grasp, the Seven now wield more power than they were ever meant to possess — and William Gravel is not happy about it. Once a member of their Order but unceremoniously replaced within their ranks, the SAS Sergeant Major and Combat Magician is on a mission of revenge, redemption, and quite possibly rebirth, as he takes on the members of the Minor Seven one-by-one. And God help each of Gravel’s former colleagues should they decide not to relinquish their sections of the Sigsand to the one man who might have the supernatural skills and restraint to use the reconstituted manuscript without accidentally destroying the Earth in the process. They all promised to use the unholy power wisely, but Gravel knows they are all Bloody Liars! (STL060659)

Before Gravel can fully gain acceptance within their ranks, the Major Seven have two tasks for him. The first, to reform the Minor Seven, whom he personally crushed with his own hands. Trouble is, the six remaining members of the Major Seven are just like the Minor Seven, a pack of bloody liars. It’s never a dull day, being the last king of Britain’s magicians, and before this bloody day is through, Combat Magician William Gravel will be rocked to the foundations of his beliefs and powers of the occult. After his systematic and murderous elimination of the members of both the Minor Seven and the Major Seven, Gravel now stands supreme, but being the King is not as glamorous as it sounds. To complicate his life even further, the British Government is breathing heavily down Gravel’s neck as the body count of innocent British citizens rises. But is Downing Street’s concern solely for public safety related to Bible Jack’s terrorist attacks on London, or is it something more politically-motivated? (W) Warren Ellis, Mike Wolfer (A) Gianluca Pagliarani, Juan Jose Ryp (CA) Felipe Massafera
Before history was recorded in stone and ink, some men wrote it in blood! Warren Ellis’ barbarian epic is finally collected, just in time for the new series coming late 2009! From the time before history began, in the time when the continents were still connected by land, from the harsh climes at the top of the world, a Northish soldier wrapped in a cape of wolfpelts walks south, into the forests of the High Midlands that are now Europe, to find a village cut in two by travelers from the East. Soon, he too is torn — between duty to the lives he has ruined just by finding them, and duty to the hideous murder-god of the Northish wastes and the berserker drugs that are his sacrament… Warren Ellis cuts loose to unleash his take on the genre fans demanded he assault with full color art from Juan Jose Ryp and Gianluca Pagliarani! Wolfskin fuses heroic fantasy in the mode of Conan, the Viking sagas, and samurai fiction into a single story of weird history and apocalyptic violence. This first volume collects the original 3-issue series with art by Ryp, Annual #1 with art by Pagliarani, and a huge cover gallery all wrapped in a stunning new painted cover by Felipe Massafera!
