Actor John Heard, the star of several huge ’80s and ’90s films, was found dead Friday in a Palo Alto, CA hotel room.
Heard was found by the hotel maid service, who then called 911, but the actor was ultimately pronounced dead on the scene. The cause of death is unclear, but the police do not suspect foul play. His rep told TMZ the actor had undergone minor back surgery on Wednesday and was staying at the hotel to recover.
Heard is probably best known for his role as Pete McCallister in the Home Alone series. The 72-year-old began his career in 1975 in a TV movie called Valley Forge. He would continue working steady as an actor for 42 years. Among his most notable roles were in the films Big, Beaches, Gladiator and the Pelican Brief. On TV he appeared in Miami Vice, The Sopranos and NCIS: Los Angeles.
Heard had been married three times, including a short-lived marriage to actress Margot Kidder. He is survived by his daughter and two sons.
