Hip-Hop Duo Rae Sremmurd Cross Over With Valiant's Shadowman Comic

Last summer, multi-platinum hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd – comprised of brothers Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee – topped worldwide music charts with "Black Beatles," the #1 hit single that also became the unofficial soundtrack to the Mannequin Challenge viral phenomenon.

Now, just announced at Billboard in time for San Diego Comic Con later this week, they're following up this summer with news of their first comics collaboration in Shadowman/Rae Sremmurd #1 – a new one-shot pairing the brothers with Valiant's New Orleans-based hero for a supernatural showdown:

Before they were dominating the music charts and selling out stages worldwide, Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee were just a pair of talented, but otherwise ordinary, brothers…until a twist of fate delivered them fame and wealth beyond their wildest imagination. Now, years later as hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd, the brothers are bound for New Orleans…and an otherworldly encounter with the supernatural guardian called Shadowman, the lone line of the defense of between our world and the Deadside that lies beyond…

Written by Eliot Rahal (Bloodshot's Day Off) with painted artwork by Wolverine's Renato Guedes, Rae Sremmurd's Slim Jxmmi tells Billboard that the group's first foray in Valiant's fictional universe is a reflection of their affinity for the publisher:

"Valiant – they have really good storylines. The art is always on point. I never know what to expect. X-O Manowar is one of my favorites. The Delinquents is cool. Bloodshot is f-cking awesome. I love Valiant."

Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani also referenced Shadowman's history of other musical appearances:

"Valiant has a long history of massive, real-world guest stars. Shadowman's classic appearance alongside Aerosmith, for instance, was a defining moment in the history of Valiant, and we've been waiting to find the right partnership to bring that legacy into the modern day. Rae Sremmurd are huge comic books fans, and everyone here at Valiant is a huge fan of their music. The combination of their talents, along with those of Eliot Rahal and Renato Guedes – two creators that we're very excited about – feels like a project that will take fans and readers by surprise."

Valiant's Shadowman/Rae Sremmurd #1 will hit comic shops on October 4th with covers by Renato Guedes, Leif Jones, Juan Jose Ryp, and Mico Suayan.

A new Shadowman ongoing series, teased earlier this year, is also slated to debut in March 2018, and Oscar nominee Reginald Hudlin will also be helming a feature film based on the character.
