New Image And Character Details From The 'Tomb Raider' Reboot

We have a new Tomb Raider on the way, and Entertainment Weekly has a new image and talked to star Alicia Vikander about her character, the legacy of Lara Croft, and how she felt when she watched Wonder Woman. Lara leaves to find her presumed-dead father, which kicks off the first adventure of the famous video game heroine. Vikander said:

"She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits…but we've stripped away all of her experience. She hasn't gone on an adventure just yet. She thought he was a stuck up businessperson living in the modern youth culture of suburban London, but then this whole box of information. This is the beginning."

The idea of starting from the beginning of this character's story is one of the reasons why Vikander decided she wanted to accept the role. She was also surprised to see that her mother knew who Lara Croft was from the Angelina Jolie movies back in the early 2000s:

"I was surprised that my mum knew what Tomb Raider was. That's due to the fact that Angelina Jolie made Lara Croft such an icon. But this is a beautiful way of showing a very loved character from more angles."

Her background as a dancer helped Vikander with the many stunts that director Roar Uthaug put her through. Uthaug's previous movie The Wave, a disaster movie where a giant wave crashes down on a small town, had a great focus on water stunts — and he's bringing that love of water stunts to Tomb Raider as well. Vikander went on:

"Just like in The Wave, we have a lot of water sequences. … I spent my last two days of shooting in a tank and that was my 16th total day being fully drenched or submerged in the water. For one action scene, we used the London venue for Olympic rafting. … They threw me down that river — with my hands tied — about 50 times. I didn't need to act, just react!"

Wonder Woman has left a mark on women everywhere and Vikander was no different. She described the extremely conflicted feelings she had while watching the movie:

"I went to the cinema and saw Wonder Woman the other day. It's a mixture of joy and sadness pouring over me, as I was thinking, 'Oh, my God, I haven't seen women onscreen like that.' And I wondered how many stories there have there been throughout the years that haven't been told. If Wonder Woman made such an impact, which it deserves to, then we need to use ten times as much force to make some change. Because it needs to happen."

It's okay, Alicia; I cried during the No Man's Land scene, too.

Summary: Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared.

Tomb Raider, directed by Roar Uthaug, will also star Walton Goggins, Dominic West, Hannah John-Kamen, and Daniel Wu. It will be released on March 18th, 2018.
