Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth Shows Off Its New Combat System

Aquaplus has given Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth an update to the game's battle system, which they're showing off today in a new trailer. Ostensibly, that trailer is about the Civil War that has seized the world of Utawarerumono after a usurper takes the Yamato throne and attempts to conquer the world around him. However, what the trailer is really doing is giving us a taste for how combat has changed in Utawarerumono with the new battle system.

First off, there's going to be a lot more battles in Mask of Truth than there have been in previous Utawarerumono titles. Part of that is because of the story: with nations and generals scrambling to either join the Yamato Empire or resist its iron grasp, so you should expect a fight to break out at any moment. Secondly, the familiar faces you'll be guiding are now seasoned adventurers, so they've definitely learned a thing or two about combat and that should be obvious once you get your hands on Mask of Truth. Third, we've got the actual mechanical improvements: Extended Action Chains, a higher-level cap, and the introduction of Co-op Final and Co-op Chain attacks. All of that will add a new layer of strategy to the turn-based battles. Plan everything right and you'll be using devastating offensive attacks to wipe the floor with your enemies in no time. Plan it wrong, and you might be wiping the floor yourself.

So you might want to practice. And with new game modes featuring training exercises, you can expand your tactical skill set in a pinch. Gain experience and BP with the Red vs. White mock battle mode or test your military aptitude through various tough challenges in Munechika's Trials mode.

Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth will be released for the PlayStation 4 on September 5th, 2017 in both a digital and physical format. It will have its original Japanese audio.
