Who Is Black Lightning – DC Gives Us A Primer For The New CW Series

Black Lightning was one of the first African-American superheroes for DC, created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden in 1977. The character has had a couple attempts at his own series and at being part of a team book as well. Greg Bernlanti teamed with Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil on a Black Lightning series for Fox, but when the network passed, the series concept moved over to the CW. There, they cast Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning, and now the series is set to premiere as a mid-season 2017–2018 series.

Though it will still be months before we first see the series, DC All-Access has put together this primer covering the comic book history of the character, from his early days of being a teacher at Garfield High and getting his powers from his belt, to internalizing his powers and joining Batman and the Outsiders, to working as Secretary of Education for President Lex Luthor and finally joining the Justice League. The character has quite a history and has passed his abilities onto his daughters, who have become heroes of their own: Thunder and Lightning.

Black Lightning will debut on the CW in 2018.
