'She's Gotta' Have It': Meet The Cast Of Lee's Netflix Series

'She's Gotta' Have It': Meet The Cast Of Lee's Netflix Series

Even though there's a still a few months to go until we get to see firsthand Spike Lee's series take on his film She's Gotta Have It for Netflix, it's never too early to meet the cast.  In new clips released by the streaming service, viewers were introduced to to Nola Darling, Greer Childs, Jamie Overstreet and Mars Blackmon and given an early glimpse into their daily lives:

Starring DeWanda Wise (Underground) in the lead role of Nola Darling (played by Tracy Camilla Johns in Lee's original film) and Hamilton star Anthony Ramos as Mars Blackmon (Lee's role in the original film), She's Gotta' Have It resets Lee's 1986 film in a contemporary setting. The ten-episode comedy-drama is expected to premiere on Thursday, November 23; and here's what NetFlix has to say about the upcoming series:

'She's Gotta' Have It': Meet The Cast Of Lee's Netflix Series

She's Gotta Have It the Netflix Original Series from Academy Award Nominated Director SPIKE LEE is a 10-episode contemporary update of Lee's 1986 revolutionary debut film. Starring DeWanda Wise (Shots Fired) in the central role of Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late twenties struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her Friends, her Job and her Three Lovers: Greer Childs played by Cleo Anthony (Divergent), Jamie Overstreet played by Lyriq Bent (The Book of Negroes), and Mars Blackmon played by Hamilton alum Anthony Ramos. Chyna Layne (Precious) and Ilfenesh Hadeara (Baywatch), Margot Bingham (Barbershop: The Next Cut), Sydney Morton (Love, New York), and Joie Lee (Do The Right Thing) also star. Lee directs all 10 episodes of the series, he created and produced the show.

Netflix announced the series in September 2016, with Lee directing all ten episodes of the first season. For Lee, building upon the lives of the characters he knows and loves so well seems like such a logical decision now…but it wasn't his original idea. In his official statement (in its original format) when the series was first announced, Lee wanted to make sure to give credit where credit is due:

"Now With The Passing (August 8th) Of The 30th Anniversary, It's A Gift That Keeps On Giving. We Are Getting An Opportunity To Revisit These Memorable Characters Who Will Still Be Relevant And Avant Garde 3 Decades Later. With All That Said It Was My Wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, Producer In Her Own Right, Who Had The Vision To Take My Film From The Big Screen And Turn It Into An Episodic Series. It Had Not Occurred To Me At All. Tonya Saw It Plain As Day. I Didn't."
