The Original Opening Of 'Power Rangers' Featured All Of The Old Rangers
Time for some spoilers for the most recent Power Rangers reboot. If you haven't seen the movie yet and don't want to be spoiled move along.
In the most recent version of the classic series the movie opens with watching the Red Ranger, as played by an alive Zordon (Bryan Cranston dragging himself along the battlefield. He's dying and he briefly runs into the former Yellow Ranger as they die. The reveal is that they were just killed by Rita (Elizabeth Banks) who was the former Green Ranger. It's an interesting idea but in an interview with ComicBook.com director Dean Israelite revealed that, in one version of the movie, we would have seen all of Zordon's rangers.
"There was an original drop that I read when I came onto the movie that had a more extensive battle in the beginning of the movie. And it had, I think, if I remember correctly, some of the other Power Rangers in there."
However, Israelite felt that it made the beginning of the movie drag and took the focus away from the new rangers. The entire point of the movie was to pass the torch to the next generation and a look at the old rangers might make the audience more interested in them than the new characters.
"I always wanted to make it very subjective, very personal and this kind of intimate opening that set your expectations, that you know that you're going into a superhero movie that's going to try to do something a little bit different with the genre. It's trying to be this more sort of personal character-driven story as opposed to a big fantastic opening that I think we've come to expect from a lot of movies. And I felt that the salient point, the story point, was really all about Zordon and Rita, and the rest just cluttered that drama."
A flashback to the old rangers could appear in future movies but it's unknown whether or not those movies will actually happen.
A group of high-school students, who are infused with unique superpowers, harness their abilities in order to save the world.
Power Rangers, directed by Dean Israelite, stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Lundi Lin, Becky G., Elizabeth Banks, and Bryan Cranston. It's out on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD now.
