Dave Cooper Returns To Comics In 2018 With New Graphic Novel "Mudbite" And The Return Of Eddy Table

Canadian cartoonist Dave Cooper began his career in the 80s as a teenager working on Barry Blair's Aircel Comics, before giving it all up and joining a band. He later returned to the medium, reinventing himself. I came across his comics such as Suckle when they were published by Fantagraphics. I saw him as, basically, a very dirty Jim Woodring. He gathered a cult audience, was nominated for a Harvey Award and his subsequent graphic novel Ripple, serialised in his series Weasel, even had an introduction by David Cronenberg.

But at the turn of the twenty-first century he said stuff that for a game of soldiers and became an oil painter,  with exhibitions in galleries in Los Angeles and New York City. Guillermo del Toro became his biggest patron and gave introductions to monographs of his paintings as well as David Cross. Around 2008 he moved into animation, with two kids TV shows produced, Pig Goat Banana Cricket and The Bagel And Becky Show. He also created a series of children's books. The Absence Of Eddy Table, appearing in Weasel, was turned into a short film by Dave Cooper and Rune Spaans, funded by the Norwegian Film Institute and produced by Oslo's Tordenfilm. Rune and the entire crew was Norwegian, with the exception of Dave and Mike Patton, the American rock star. Here's a trailer.

And it is that success that seems to have spurred Dave Cooper to return to comics after so long, with his first graphic novel since 2003.  Mudbite is described as a suite of stories about brain-damaged Amazons, black shiny eels, and much more. It will star Eddy Table, with two all-new Eddy Table stories, Mud River and Bug Bite, in which Eddy acts as Dave's alter ego. In Mud River, Eddy makes a foolish mistake, causing a sweet, innocent Amazon to bonk her head, turning her into a very impressionable automaton. In Bug Bite, Eddy has brought his family on a vacation to Europe, but he's soon distracted by a series of manifestations of his own obsessions ― voluptuous women, mysterious and collectible "microdevices," and a strange, impromptu jam session.

Mudbite will be published in April 2018.Dave Cooper Returns To Comics In 2018 With New Graphic Novel "Mudbite" And The Return Of Eddy Table
