Netflix has decided to not renew their original comedy series Girlboss for a second season. This comes on the heels of the streaming service cancelling of The Get Down and Sense8, the first three real cancellations the company has done. But unlike the first two, Girlboss was critically panned, receiving only a 32% on Rotten Tomatoes. The series is based on an autobiography of Sophia Amoruso and starred Britt Robertson and Ellie Reed. It was written by Kay Cannon (Pitch Perfect) and directed by Christian Ditter.
The 13-episode season, which debuted in April, focused on Sophia (Robertson), an anarchist who happens on selling vintage clothing on-line and becomes a businesswoman. One of the difficulties the series had was it’s main character was written to be somewhat unlikable. That makes finding an audience more difficult.
Though Netflix has cancelled three shows, their renewal rate is still much higher than networks. This is also the first half-hour comedy series that they have cancelled out of the 15 they’ve made since getting into the genre with the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in 2015. All the others have either been renewed or are waiting for word. Their chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, has made it clear at the PGA’s Produced By conference that it comes down to, like any network, how much they spend compared to how many people are watching it.
