'Street Fighter V' Producer Admits 'Mortal Kombat' Influenced The Game's Direction

We got a lot of cool news coming out of E3, as well as some tasty tidbits. One to chew over involves Street Fighter V as game producer Yoshinori Ono admits another fighting title influenced the way they developed the game. In an interview with IGN, Ono discussed how the reboot of Mortal Kombat in 2011, with a refocused storyline, cutscenes, and interactions, helped change the way Street Fighter V was created and eventually became what it is today.

"When [I] saw that, [I] thought Capcom should really take advantage of mimicking this and incorporate it into its games as well. So story mode has then become a big thing in Street Fighter also," Ono said, additionally noting that he does seriously consider suggestions fans offer to him on his Facebook page. Inspiration between the two franchises is a two-way street of course, as Boon told IGN earlier this year that Street Fighter II's dizzy mechanic ultimately resulted in Mortal Kombat's fatalities.

This is one of those cool stories where you get a peek behind the curtain and see that everyone checks out what everyone else is doing, and while they may be competing for the same market share of fans, they can appreciate each other's work and be influenced by it. Ono also spoke on revisiting Street Fighter II, Capcom vs. Marvel Infinite, and Street Fighter's 30th anniversary.
