'Blade Runner 2049' Director Denis Villeneuve Made Peace With The Idea Of Failure

'Blade Runner 2049' Director Denis Villeneuve Made Peace With The Idea Of FailureIn the age of the remake and the reboot when a creative team takes on something that is truly iconic there is always a chance that it will not go well. That is something that the creative team behind the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 were more than aware. The "very late" sequel sometimes works and sometimes doesn't and director Denis Villeneuve knew that there was a very good chance that this entire production could be rejected by the public even if they did everything they could to make it a great movie. Villeneuve spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the prospect of failure.

"Ryan Gosling and I made peace with the idea that the chances of success were very narrow," he said. "I came on board because the script was very strong. But no matter what you do, no matter how good what you're doing is, the film will always be compared to the first, which is a masterpiece. So I made peace with that. And when you make piece with that, you are free."

That artistic freedom wasn't the only type of freedom that he got. Villeneuve also spoke about how Ridley Scott stepped away and let Villeneuve make the Blade Runner universe his own.

"To take Ridley Scott's universe and try to make it my own was a really big task for me," he said. "He said, it's your movie. I'll be there if you need me, otherwise I'll be away. And I must say he was not there physically, but I felt his presence all the time, because I was dealing with his universe all the time. So in a way he wasn't there, but he was there a lot at the same time."

it appears that Villeneuve and his crew had the freedom to make whatever kind of project they wanted to. A movie is always better when it has the creative people making the decisions and not the studio. This is a huge undertaking and the fact that Villeneuve and everyone else has accepted that it might not work out but went ahead with the project anyway means we're going to get something interesting if nothing else.

Summary: Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

Blade Runner 2049, directed by Denis Villeneuve, stars Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Robin Wright, and Jared Leto. It will be released on October 6, 2017.
