Laura Martin Talks Colors While Working On A Spider-Gwen Commission

Laura Martin has been a digital colorist for more than a decade, but she had only recently started doing traditional colors. In the newest Quickdraw from Marvel, Martin sits down with markers and colors a commission of Spider-Gwen and talks us through the process as she goes. The advantages to digital coloring, as she points out, are the many things you can do to edit the colors once they are applied. You don't have those options when doing traditional colors. A fan of the Spider-Gwen costume, she had never gotten the chance to color the character digitally, so she was excited by the project. She talks about choosing the colors of everything from her skin, to her backpack to the background and making the image pop. She talks about how a colorist must take black & white art and add depth, distance and atmosphere. She also talks about not overpowering or overcoloring the line art.
