Neill Blomkamp Is "Planning Another Movie" In The World Of 'District 9'

Neill Blomkamp took the world by surprise this week when he finally released a trailer for the first project from his new studio Oats Studios. It looks really cool and Blomkamp did a long interview with The Verge about another movie in the world of District 9, and his very dead Alien movie.

While talking about the new studio Blomkamp was asked if he was going to use Oats Studios to return to the world of any of his previous movies.

Probably not, no. In order to do that you would have to interact with the studios that own those films. The whole point here is to just be autonomous and just do whatever we want.

With District 9, I plan on making another film in that world. To go back and work with WETA, and make the film would be cool, but anything that pre-exists like that may not be the best fit for whatever we're trying here.

Please do because we've been waiting since 2009 to find out how that movie ended. District 9 was a smash hit that earned $230 million on a $30 million budget despite the R-rating shrinking the audience considerably. It also walked away with four Oscar nominations including Best Picture. It's not often that a director gets that kind of response from a first time movie. While Elysium and Chappie were not as well recieved they also had impossible standards to live up to. Blomkamp described the three movies are not "straight piece of filmmaking."

Pretty much every feature film that I've done is not a straight piece of filmmaking. District 9 is entirely metaphor, allegory, and partially satire. Elysium is satirical, and Chappie is completely mental. It fits into its own genre.

When asked about his rumor Alien 5 idea Blomkamp cleared the air, for good, to let everyone know that the project is not happening.

I think it's totally dead, yes. That would be an accurate assumption at this point. It's sad. I spent a long time working on that, and I feel like it was really pretty awesome. But politically, the way it's gone now, and the way that it all is — it's just not going to live.

The word "politics" is interesting because there were a lot of rumors that Ridley Scott was the one who decided that the project wasn't going to happen. The interviewer pressed him on this issue but Blomkamp still had nothing but good things to say about Scott.

Yeah. Ridley [Scott] was one of my idols growing up. He's so talented and he's made this film that really set me off in a direction. I want to just be as respectful and not go stamping around in this world that he created. I think that if the circumstances were different, and I didn't feel like I was getting too close to something that he obviously feels a massive personal connection to, that things that may have played out differently. But I did want to be as respectful as possible.

Oats Studios – "Volume One" will stream sometime this year.
