RUMOR: The Future Of Sony's Spider-Man-Free Spider-Verse

silversableblackcatSony is in an interesting place with their Spider-Man movies. After The Amazing Spider-Man series fell apart in such spectacular fashion, the company had to limp over to Marvel Studios and ask for a shared custody agreement for poor Peter Parker. However, that agreement apparently doesn't cover the rest of the Spider-Man universe and Sony is moving ahead with their own.

We've had the announcement that Tom Hardy is going to play Venom in a solo Venom movie, and we also know that a Black Cat and Silver Sable team-up movie has a director and is going ahead. These movies are in a Spider-Man-type universe, but they won't be connected to the MCU or Tom Holland's current version of Peter Parker. So what are Sony's plans?

We have another rumor about that — and we have to once again stress that these are rumors. They once again come from The Splash Report, who brought us the story detailed we reported on a few days ago. If these rumors are true, and if this is the direction that Sony is heading in, then it's a little interesting if nothing else.

"With Wonder Woman opening this week, it's a pretty good bet Sony is taking universe building tips from Warner/DC. Why?

Silver and Black is the setup for an all female Spidey-verse team movie. It ends with Silver Sable (a la Nick Fury) rounding up a team of The Black Cat, Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman), Charlotte Witter (Stunner), Sarah Ehret (Jackpot) and Cassie St. Commons (Dusk)."

Well, okay Sony, that's a weird direction to take. There are couple of ways that Sony could make their universe work that doesn't involve dragging a bunch of characters together for a really weird team-up movie. This is the definition of chasing a trend which has never worked well for any studio.

The Daniel Craig era of James Bond movies are currently in the process of driving themselves into a ditch because they are chasing trends. Casino Royale was Batman Begins, but with James Bond. Quantum of Solace was a Bourne movie. Skyfall was The Dark Knight, and Spectre was trying to make a MCU-style continuity movie. There is nothing to be gained by chasing trends, because it always comes across as insincere. Come up with a good story first, Sony, and go from there. Don't just throw a bunch of ladies in a movie because Wonder Woman did well.
