Archie's 75th Anniversary Digest #10 Review – Do You Wanna Build A Snowman?

Archie's 75th Anniversary Digest #10

Archie and Disney are my two favorite things in the whole world. So I am immediately enthralled by the Frozen spoof cover on Archie's 75th Anniversary Digest #10. The cover–by Dan Parent— reflects the interior, as the book is heavily dedicated to the Archie fairy tale spoofs. There's a little history to each classic fairy tale before the story, offering readers a little background. They're all great, but I'll just focus on my two favorites.

"Betty and the Beast" is clearly a Beauty and the Beast spoof, and since the classic tale was made new again from Disney's newest live action installment, the story is on everyone's mind. The story was first published in Betty and Veronica #265  in 2013, and has arguably one of the greatest variant covers for Archie Comics. Dan Parent writes the tale as old as time, while Jeff Shultz pencils this certain as the sun story. I'm sorry, I'll stop. When Prince Archie turns down the enchantress Veronica's advances, she turns him into a beast. As a result the whole castle is cursed, and only true love can turn him back. If you're Team Betty, this is the perfect story for you. The dialogue is engaging and funny, and the art is beautiful. Shultz's classic style is appealing and refreshing compared to all the new artists gracing the reboots.

"The Little Mermaids" is another fantastic story, written by Parent and penciled by Shultz. My eye was immediately drawn to the lush, beautiful details on the under the sea scenes. It's one of the best drawn stories in the book, and the story, by Parent, is strong too. The creative liberties on the fable aren't bad either. Betty and Veronica are step sister mermaids who both fall in love with Prince Archie. Cheryl happens to be the protagonist, which is fitting for her. The story was originally published in Betty and Veronica #267, when the series was going through its fairy tale phase.

I really enjoyed Archie's 75th Anniversary Digest #10 out of all the other ones Archie has been putting out, but again, I also really like Disney. This book is great for longtime fans, and especially new fans.
