"Black Devil Spine" By Doug Brunell Delivers Chills

Black Devil Spine is a book of graphic horror by Doug Brunell. It deals with sexual violence without watering it down or romanticizing it, and may be triggering for abuse victims. It is very definitely made for the mature reader, and at times is not a comfortable read.

That being said, it doesn't merely depict horrible things for the sake of simple shock. The arc of the main character is a cautionary tale about human blind spots — particularly someone's ego, the power of money, and the self-serving belief that things will somehow turn out for the best, even when things are obviously heading towards hell on a rocket-propelled bobsled. It offers the enjoyment of rubber-necking at a car crash, and none of the guilt.

I would recommend this book if you enjoy books such as The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris.
