Project Scorpio Lets Developers Choose The Frame Rate For Their Games

Project Scorpio is allowing developers to dictate the frame rate in which their games appear on the system, according to news first dropped by Gamespot after Xbox engineering lead Mike Ybarra posted the tweet below.

A question was raised about Microsoft putting a cap on the FPS, to which Ybarra replied, "No, there isn't," indicating that developers are free to choose how well their game performs on the upcoming system including cutscenes, overall gameplay, and online multiplayer.

To add to the potential, Microsoft Studios Publishing GN Shannon Loftis chimed in when asked about the difference in FPS for games going out on both Scorpio and XB1, adding that companies have a choice as to whether they wish to keep everything looking the same across both systems, or cater to those with a better FPS.

The best way to look at this is that Microsoft and the Xbox team are taking a hands-off approach when it comes to companies creating games for their system, which has its benefits and drawbacks.

The big benefit is that they're free to explore how good of a game they can make with a system that at the moment has undefined limits in the public eye, which could make for titles that look amazing compared to, say, a PC counterpart. The drawback is that if a game looks terrible, you know it isn't on Microsoft or Xbox, it's on the devs.

So totally hypothetically, let's say we finally get that Halo 6 we've been wishing for, and when we get the game, it looks just a tad blurry or not as pristine as it could be as you go around shooting people up. You now know that 343 either cheapened out somewhere in development or somehow reached the system's limitations.

I can only imagine that devs would take every advantage of this and make their games look as gorgeous as they could in every aspect possible, but then again, we don't control their budgets and timetables, so time will eventually show us how companies handle having that much freedom.
